Pressure Pumping Operators Reduced Diesel Use by Approximately 100 Million Gallons

Cat® Tier 4 Dynamic Gas Blending™ System for Pressure Pumping Operations Displaces Diesel to Lower Fuel Costs

Caterpillar’s System Saves 100 Million Gallons of Diesel in 2023

Houston, Texas — Caterpillar Oil & Gas announced that oil and gas companies in North America saved around 100 million gallons of diesel fuel in 2023. This was possible thanks to their Cat® Tier 4 Dynamic Gas Blending™ (DGB) system. The system allows pressure-pumping operators to use less diesel and save money.

In 2019, Caterpillar Oil & Gas launched the Tier 4 DGB system to help companies use two types of fuel together—diesel and natural gas. By blending these fuels, the system reduces the amount of diesel needed. This helps companies cut fuel costs and use cleaner energy. Caterpillar started tracking the system’s performance soon after it was launched.

The data from 2023 came from connected equipment used in North America and covered different working conditions. On average, the system replaced 60% of diesel fuel, with some equipment hitting a peak of 85% replacement. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, diesel cost around $4.21 per gallon in 2023. Using the Tier 4 DGB system saved companies millions of dollars in fuel costs over the year.

“As oil and gas companies try to save fuel and meet energy needs, our Tier 4 DGB system helps them achieve both goals,” said Derek Kamp, vice president of Caterpillar Oil & Gas. “This shows that we are committed to innovation and helping pressure pumping operators work more efficiently.”

The Tier 4 DGB system also comes with advanced technology that helps prevent costly breakdowns and meets the latest environmental rules. Although fuel savings can vary depending on the job site, companies can use Caterpillar’s DGB Fuel Cost Estimator to calculate how much money they can save with the system.
