Princess Cruise Ship Will Have Delayed Embarkation for Disinfection

Sapphire Princess Delays Boarding for Extra Cleaning Before Antarctic Voyage

Sapphire Princess Delays Boarding to Keep Passengers Safe

The Sapphire Princess, a popular cruise ship, is preparing for an exciting 17-night journey to Antarctica, starting December 18, 2024. But before the ship sets sail from Buenos Aires, Argentina, passengers will face a small delay. Princess Cruises announced this delay because some passengers on the current trip have reported feeling unwell with stomach-related issues.

To make sure everyone on the next voyage stays safe, the cruise line has decided to thoroughly clean and disinfect the entire ship. This extra step is being taken even though the number of sick passengers and crew members is not very high.

Why is the Embarkation Delayed?

Princess Cruises shared a letter with passengers explaining the reason for the delay. It said that the health and safety of passengers are their top priorities. To prevent the spread of illness, the crew will spend additional time cleaning every part of the ship.

Passengers boarding the Sapphire Princess for the new voyage are being asked to come to the terminal only after 1:30 p.m. on December 18. The cruise line has also made it clear that no one will be allowed into the terminal before this time, and there will be limited places to wait nearby. People staying at Princess Hotels or using cruise transfers will get updated pickup times.

Once passengers board, they will find their staterooms ready later in the afternoon. Everyone must be on the ship by 5:30 p.m. local time. Despite the delay, the Sapphire Princess will leave Buenos Aires as planned at 4 p.m. on December 19, 2024.

The Itinerary is Still the Same

The good news is that the Sapphire Princess’s schedule remains unchanged. Passengers can look forward to visiting incredible destinations, including:

  • Punta Arenas, Chile
  • Ushuaia, Argentina
  • Port Stanley, Falkland Islands
  • Montevideo, Uruguay

The cruise promises breathtaking views and unique experiences, combined with the world-class amenities onboard the Sapphire Princess.

About the Stomach Illness on the Ship

Reports of stomach-related illnesses, also known as gastrointestinal illnesses, are not uncommon during the colder months. However, Princess Cruises has clarified that the Sapphire Princess has not experienced an “outbreak.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) keeps a close watch on illnesses on cruise ships through its Vessel Sanitation Program. This program declares an outbreak only if 3% or more of passengers or crew report symptoms. So far, the Sapphire Princess is not listed among ships with outbreaks in 2024.

Passenger, 72, feared dead after falling off Princess Cruise ship

The decision to clean the ship more thoroughly is a precaution. Princess Cruises wants to avoid any health risks for passengers on the next journey. The crew is working hard to ensure a smooth and safe voyage.

Previous Illness Reports on Sapphire Princess

Earlier in 2024, the Sapphire Princess dealt with a norovirus outbreak during its April 5 trip. That incident was handled quickly and resolved. Since then, no major issues have been reported.

However, other ships like the Ruby Princess and Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam have faced similar gastrointestinal illness outbreaks recently. During cold and flu season, these illnesses can spread faster, especially in close spaces like cruise ships.

A Safer Start for an Antarctic Adventure

With the extra cleaning measures in place, passengers can look forward to a fresh and sanitized ship. The Sapphire Princess is ready to offer a memorable Antarctic cruise experience while prioritizing everyone’s health and safety.

This precaution ensures that passengers can enjoy their voyage without worrying about health concerns. Whether exploring the icy landscapes of Antarctica or relaxing onboard, the Sapphire Princess is committed to delivering a safe and unforgettable journey.
