Progress on Third RoPax Ferry at Baku Shipyard

Construction of the third RoPax-type ferry at Baku Shipyard is advancing according to schedule, as confirmed by ASCO, a subsidiary of AZCON Holding. The assembly of the vessel’s main hull blocks has been completed, marking a significant milestone in the project. The construction has now moved into the next phase, which includes the installation of pipelines, electrical cabling, and ventilation systems. Additionally, work is ongoing on mechanical equipment, insulation for living quarters, and cabin partitioning.

This new RoPax ferry features several enhancements over its predecessors. Notable upgrades include a three-ton utility crane, extra storage tanks for the compressed air system, and a dedicated power supply for refrigerated containers. These improvements aim to bolster the ferry’s operational capabilities and safety features.

Safety and Operational Enhancements

In addition to the upgrades, the new ferry will incorporate advanced safety measures. It will be equipped with a dangerous gas detection system in the lower cargo hold and an additional foam-based fire-fighting nozzle. The project also includes the installation of an automatic railway track crossing system and a braking system on the cargo deck. In the main engine room, enhancements will feature an additional cooling system, two service hatches, and two service cranes.

Some technical solutions have been optimized compared to earlier models. For instance, the installation of a passenger elevator has been omitted, and the rear auxiliary steering system has been removed. Instead, the power of the forward auxiliary steering system has been increased from 350 kW to 545 kW, enhancing maneuverability.

Specifications and Future Operations

Similar to the previously launched RoPax ferries, Azerbaijan and Zarifa Aliyeva, the new vessel is designed to reach a maximum speed of 14 knots. It will measure 154.5 meters in length, 17.7 meters in width, and 7.5 meters in side height. The ferry will have the capacity to transport up to 100 passengers and either 56 tank-type rail wagons or 50 trucks/TIRs simultaneously.

The introduction of this new ferry is crucial for modernizing ASCO’s fleet and enhancing Azerbaijan’s transit capabilities. Like its counterparts, the RoPax ferry is intended for cargo and passenger transportation across the Caspian Sea, including operations along the Middle Corridor. This development not only strengthens the maritime infrastructure but also supports regional trade and connectivity.
