PRS authorized by the maritime administration of Latvia

Poland’s Shipping Register Now Authorized to Inspect Latvian Ships: What It Means for the Future

Poland Signs Agreement with Latvia for Maritime Inspections

On October 10, 2024, the Polish Register of Shipping (PRS) officially received permission to act on behalf of the Republic of Latvia’s maritime administration. This agreement allows PRS to oversee Latvian-flagged ships, checking if they follow international laws and local regulations. The deal covers inspections of ships currently in operation and those under construction or reconstruction. It was signed following the rules of the Recognized Organizations (RO) Code.

Latvia’s Maritime Presence in the Baltic Region

Latvia is a Baltic country with nearly 500 kilometers of coastline. About 200 kilometers of the coast faces the Baltic Sea, while the remaining 300 kilometers run along the Gulf of Riga. The Latvian Maritime Administration has been part of the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (Paris MoU) on port inspections since May 12, 2005.

The Paris MoU regularly evaluates the performance of national maritime fleets. Latvia’s fleet was once listed on the white list for having a high compliance rate. However, this year, the fleet shifted to the grey list, meaning it still meets acceptable safety and legal standards but has recorded a few more detentions than before.

What PRS Authorization Means for the Shipping Industry

This new partnership gives PRS the ability to expand its inspection services to more ships flying the Latvian flag. PRS now holds 44 authorizations worldwide, positioning itself as a leading player in the maritime inspection industry. Its goal is to build a reliable reputation by gaining more international recognitions and expanding its reach in the maritime market.

Why This Agreement is Important

  • Strengthened Maritime Cooperation: The partnership between Poland and Latvia helps both countries maintain high shipping standards.
  • Broader Market Access for PRS: With this authorization, PRS can serve more clients and further improve its global standing.
  • Focus on Safety and Compliance: Inspections by PRS ensure Latvian ships follow both international maritime rules and local laws, reducing the risk of accidents and detentions.

This move is part of PRS’s ongoing efforts to earn more recognitions and boost its influence in the global maritime industry.
