PSA Singapore and MOL Launch Joint Venture for Roro Terminal

PSA Singapore and Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), a prominent Japanese shipping company, have announced a strategic partnership to establish a dedicated roll-on/roll-off (roro) terminal in Singapore. This joint venture aims to enhance operations at one of Asia’s busiest automotive transshipment hubs. The terminal is anticipated to commence operations in the first half of this year, pending regulatory approval. This collaboration will bolster MOL’s expanding car carrier business while allowing PSA to deepen its involvement in vehicle logistics at the port.

Singapore stands as Southeast Asia’s largest automotive transshipment hub, connecting regional production centers with markets across Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. The new terminal is designed to improve service reliability and operational efficiency for MOL’s roro services, addressing the growing demand for terminal capacity as shipping volumes increase. The partnership will leverage MOL’s extensive global roro network and established automotive customer base, while PSA will contribute its expertise in terminal operations and port infrastructure.

Operational Synergies and Sustainability Initiatives

The collaboration between PSA and MOL extends beyond mere terminal operations. Both companies have committed to working together on optimizing operations, developing digital tools, and implementing sustainability initiatives. This alignment is part of PSA’s broader network strategy and MOL’s long-term vision for growth in the automotive logistics sector.

Nelson Quek, PSA’s regional CEO for Southeast Asia, emphasized that this partnership will reinforce Singapore’s position in global automotive supply chains. He noted that it would also enhance PSA’s integration with car carrier customers, fostering a more robust logistics framework. Meanwhile, Jotaro Tamura, MOL’s senior managing executive officer, highlighted that this investment aligns with the company’s strategy to expand its automotive logistics services beyond traditional shipping. The focus will be on improving scale, efficiency, and environmental performance, ensuring that both companies can meet the evolving demands of the automotive industry.
