QRDI Council and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions sign MoU
Qatar Advances Maritime Innovation Through New MoU
Doha, Qatar: The Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation (QRDI) Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing the nation’s maritime technology landscape. They recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions. This partnership aims to bolster research, development, and innovation in Qatar. The agreement underscores the commitment of both organizations to drive technological advancements that align with Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
Innovative Calls for Maritime Advancement
Under the newly established MoU, the QRDI Council, in collaboration with Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions, has launched four major calls for innovation. These initiatives fall under the Qatar Open Innovation (QOI) program, which serves as a platform for fostering innovative solutions in various sectors. The primary focus of these calls is to enhance digitalization, asset maintenance, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, and custom-built solutions specifically for shipyard operations.
Dr. Abdelhak Belaidi, the RDI Program Manager at QRDI Council, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration. He stated, “Our partnership with Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions marks a significant milestone in advancing maritime technology and shipyard operations.” This sentiment reflects the broader goal of supporting Qatar’s vision for technological leadership and sustainability. The calls aim to address real-world challenges and drive progress within the maritime sector, which is crucial for the nation’s economic development.
The four innovation calls include initiatives such as the Digitalised and Dynamic Shipyard Operations Plan, which seeks to modernize shipyard management and planning. Another call focuses on the AI-Enabled 3D Cutting & Bevelling Machine, designed to automate complex structural repairs. Additionally, the Digital Asset and Predictive Maintenance Technologies initiative aims to digitize the management of over 20,000 critical assets within the shipyard. Finally, the Inspection and Machining Robot for Inner Water Pipe Maintenance call emphasizes the creation of a custom-built Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) for efficient inspections and repairs.
Supporting Qatar’s Vision for Technological Leadership
The Qatar Open Innovation program serves as a vital platform for startups and innovators. It connects them with potential government and corporate buyers, facilitating the co-creation of market-ready solutions. This initiative addresses pressing opportunities in five national priority areas: energy, health, resource sustainability, society, and digital technology. These areas are outlined in the QRDI Strategy 2030, which aims to identify opportunities for innovation collaborations that drive economic prosperity.
Jos JAA Goris, CEO of Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions, emphasized the importance of the MoU and the innovation calls. He stated, “The MoU with QRDI Council and the four Innovation Calls emphasize our commitment to collaborate and implement innovative, cutting-edge technology solutions.” Goris highlighted that these efforts will enhance operational efficiency and technical capabilities in the maritime and energy industries. Moreover, they will contribute to greater economic benefits and sustainable development in Qatar.
As Qatar continues to invest in research and innovation, the partnership between QRDI Council and Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions marks a pivotal moment for the maritime sector. By embracing technological advancements, Qatar is positioning itself as a leader in maritime innovation, aligning with its long-term vision for sustainable growth and development.
