Record breaking year for steel imports at the Port
Port of Liverpool Sets Steel Import Record
Peel Ports Group has ambitious plans to transform the Port of Liverpool into a premier global hub for steel. This announcement comes on the heels of a record-breaking year for bulk steel imports at the port, which processed an impressive 702,000 tons in 2024. This figure not only marks a significant increase from previous years but also highlights the port’s growing importance in the international steel market.
Record-Breaking Imports and Strategic Investments
The Port of Liverpool has achieved a remarkable milestone by processing 702,000 tons of bulk steel in 2024, surpassing its previous record by over 50,000 tons. This surge in imports has been fueled by shipments from countries such as South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Turkey, and various European nations. The increase in volume is attributed to Peel Ports Group’s substantial investments in port infrastructure, aimed at enhancing support for the steel industry.
In a bid to expand its operational capabilities, Peel Ports Group recently allocated £2 million towards the development of a new deep-water bulk berth at the Alexandra Complex. This upgrade allows the port to accommodate a wider range of vessels, including Handymax bulk carriers, thereby increasing its cargo handling efficiency. Additionally, the company is set to invest in 200,000 square feet of new indoor storage space in 2025, which will enhance its capabilities in handling coil and precious metals.
Notably, 85% of the steel imported in 2024 was steel coil, destined for various sectors such as construction, automotive, agriculture, renewable energy, healthcare, and manufacturing. Phil Hall, Mersey Port Director at Peel Ports Group, expressed enthusiasm about the port’s achievements, stating, “The figures speak for themselves, showing the work we’re doing to meet our ambition of cementing Liverpool as the leading UK hub providing vital commodities to a range of industries.” He emphasized the company’s commitment to further developing the port’s infrastructure and services to support this growth.
