Rescue Helicopter Saves Injured Crew from Tugboat

On Thursday, a dramatic rescue operation unfolded off the coast of Hualien, where a helicopter airlifted five crew members from a tugboat after one was injured. The incident occurred while the tugboat was assisting a drifting bulk carrier with 17 crew members, including five Filipinos and 12 Taiwanese. The injured crew member, identified as Yu, suffered a head laceration during the operation, prompting immediate action from local authorities.

Rescue Operation Amid Challenging Conditions

The rescue mission began around 1 p.m. when the tugboat, dispatched by the Port of Hualien, became entangled in a cable while trying to assist the bulk carrier. This unfortunate turn of events caused the tugboat to lose propulsion amidst rough sea conditions, making it impossible for smaller boats to reach the crew. Deputy Coast Guard Patrol Team Captain Wu Cheng-ta reported that approximately 40 personnel were mobilized on the ground to support the operation.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the patrol team requested a helicopter from the National Airborne Service Corps. The helicopter arrived on the scene at approximately 3 p.m., successfully airlifting all five crew members, including the semi-conscious Yu, who was promptly transported to a hospital for treatment upon landing in Hualien.

Fortunately, all 17 crew members aboard the Panama-registered cargo ship, owned by Taiwan’s China Steel Corp., were reported safe, with no injuries. The vessel, which had suffered an engine failure earlier in the day, remained stable despite being adrift due to strong monsoon winds. Local authorities confirmed that a large salvage tug was scheduled to arrive at 8:30 p.m. to assist the cargo ship further.

Community Response and Safety Measures

This incident highlights the importance of swift response and coordination among local authorities during maritime emergencies. The successful airlift operation not only ensured the safety of the injured crew member but also demonstrated the effectiveness of the rescue teams in challenging weather conditions. The collaboration between the Coast Guard, the National Airborne Service Corps, and local port authorities played a crucial role in managing the situation effectively.

The timely response and successful rescue operation underscore the dedication of the teams involved in ensuring the safety of those at sea.
