Lifeboat Capsizes During Rescue on Firth of Clyde

An RNLI lifeboat capsized during a critical rescue operation on the Firth of Clyde, leaving four volunteer crew members in the water. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning as the Largs RNLI lifeboat, named R A Wilson, responded to a distress call from a sinking fishing vessel off the west coast of Scotland. Fortunately, the crew managed to right the lifeboat and return safely to shore, where they were assessed by paramedics and found to be unharmed.

Rescue Operation Details

The Largs RNLI lifeboat was dispatched to assist a fishing vessel that was taking on water. As the lifeboat approached the scene, it capsized, resulting in the four volunteers being thrown into the water. Demonstrating quick thinking and adherence to their training, the crew successfully righted the lifeboat and climbed back aboard. They were subsequently escorted back to Largs Lifeboat Station by another RNLI team.

Upon their return, paramedics evaluated the volunteers, confirming that they had not sustained any injuries. Meanwhile, two individuals from the distressed fishing vessel were airlifted by a rescue helicopter and taken ashore for medical evaluation. Unfortunately, the fishing vessel did not survive the incident and sank shortly thereafter.

Investigation and Future Coverage

Jill Hepburn, the RNLI’s head of region, expressed relief that the volunteer crew emerged unscathed. She noted, “They were able to follow their training and re-right the lifeboat and bring it back to Largs. We are currently carrying out an investigation in conjunction with the MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) into the incident.”

Coastguard Rescue Teams from Greenock, Largs, and Cumbrae, along with a HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter, were deployed to the scene to assist in the operation. The Largs lifeboat sustained some damage during the incident and will be out of service while repairs are conducted. In the interim, the RNLI has arranged for emergency cover in the Largs area through nearby lifeboat stations at Troon, Tighnabruaich, Arran, and Helensburgh, along with a relief lifeboat to ensure continuous 24/7 coverage.
