HMS Venturer Launches as Royal Navy's Future Frigate

On June 2, 2025, HMS Venturer, the first of five Type 31 frigates for the Royal Navy, has entered the final phase of construction at Babcock’s facility in Rosyth, Fife. This significant milestone marks a key step in the UK’s £10 billion investment to modernize its naval fleet, replacing the aging Type 23 vessels. The ship, measuring 139 meters in length and weighing 5,700 tons, is set to enhance the Royal Navy’s operational capabilities.
Construction Milestone and Future Plans
After over three years of construction, HMS Venturer has finally emerged from the assembly hall, a process that took nearly 12 hours. The ship’s hull was carefully transported outside using specially designed cradles, allowing the team to prepare for her upcoming launch into the water. This transition is crucial as it paves the way for the installation and testing of advanced systems, sensors, and weaponry.

Commander Chris Cozens, the Senior Naval Officer of HMS Venturer, expressed pride in this moment, stating, “This is the first time Babcock and the Royal Navy have been able to unveil this next-generation frigate to the public.” He emphasized the importance of this event in contributing to the UK’s security and prosperity. The Type 31 frigates are designed to be 60% larger than their predecessors while operating with a reduced crew size of around 120 personnel, compared to 180-200 on the Type 23s.
As HMS Venturer takes its place in the water, the assembly hall will soon welcome HMS Formidable, the third ship in the Type 31 program. The facility is equipped to build two Type 31 frigates simultaneously, with HMS Active already in progress. Babcock CEO David Lockwood hailed the rollout as a proud moment, highlighting the dedication and skill of the workforce in Rosyth. He noted that these frigates are designed for flexibility and long-term support, ensuring they will serve effectively for decades to come.
Significance of the Type 31 Program
The Type 31 program represents a transformative step for the Royal Navy, aiming to enhance maritime security and operational readiness. With a focus on modern technology and reduced crew requirements, these frigates are expected to play a vital role in various missions around the globe. The investment in the Type 31 fleet underscores the UK’s commitment to maintaining a robust naval presence in an increasingly complex security environment.
As HMS Venturer prepares for its launch, the anticipation surrounding the Type 31 program continues to grow. The successful construction and rollout of these vessels will not only bolster the Royal Navy’s capabilities but also support the UK’s defense industry and workforce. With the first ship now unveiled, the future of the Royal Navy looks promising as it embraces new technologies and operational strategies.
