Safe Bulkers Expands Fleet with New Kamsarmax Vessels
Safe Bulkers, Inc., a global leader in marine drybulk transportation, has announced a significant expansion of its fleet. The company has entered into an agreement to acquire two newbuild Kamsarmax class vessels, each with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 82,500. These vessels are scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2028 and the first quarter of 2029. This strategic move aligns with the company’s commitment to enhancing its operational capabilities and environmental sustainability.
The new vessels are designed to meet the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Phase 3 requirements for the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, they comply with the latest NOx emissions regulations, known as NOx-Tier III. The newbuilds are sister ships to existing vessels in Safe Bulkers’ fleet, which are recognized for their advanced energy efficiency features, leading to reduced fuel consumption and lower operational costs.
Commitment to Environmental Standards and Fleet Modernization
Safe Bulkers has already taken delivery of twelve vessels that meet the IMO GHG Phase 3 and NOx Tier III standards. With this latest agreement, the company now has an outstanding order book of eight newbuild vessels. Among these, two are designed to operate on methanol dual fuel, with deliveries scheduled for four vessels in 2026, two in 2027, one in 2028, and one in 2029. This proactive approach to fleet renewal is part of Safe Bulkers’ strategy to maintain a competitive edge in the marine transportation sector.
Dr. Loukas Barmparis, President of Safe Bulkers, emphasized the importance of these newbuild orders in the company’s fleet renewal strategy. He stated that the goal is to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of the company while ensuring that it operates one of the most modern and environmentally efficient dry bulk fleets in the industry. This commitment not only positions Safe Bulkers favorably in the market but also aligns with global efforts to reduce the environmental impact of maritime operations.
