Saudi Arabia Launches First Multi-Mission Frigate, HMS King Saud

Saudi Arabia marked a significant milestone with the launch of its first Multi-Mission Surface Combatant frigate, HMS King Saud, at a U.S. shipyard in Wisconsin in December 2025. The unveiling of this state-of-the-art vessel signifies a major step in Saudi Arabia’s naval modernization efforts.

The launch of the HMS Saud (820) is part of Saudi Arabia’s Tuwaiq Project, a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s naval capabilities. With Lockheed Martin as the prime contractor for combat systems, the project emphasizes structured crew training and shore preparations to ensure operational readiness.

The HMS Saud boasts impressive specifications, measuring 118 meters in length and equipped with advanced combat systems and weapons. Propelled by a combined diesel and gas arrangement, the frigate can reach speeds of up to 30 knots, enabling extended operations beyond Saudi Arabia’s coastal waters. Additionally, the vessel’s integrated helicopter and drone capabilities enhance its surveillance and engagement capabilities.

The HMS Saud (820) measures around 118 meters in length, with a beam of 17.6 meters, a draft of 4.3 meters, and a maximum displacement of about 3,600 tonnes. The Wisconsin ceremony brought together key officials from the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF), as well as senior Saudi and U.S. representatives involved in the program. The Tuwaiq Project, initiated with the U.S. approval for an MMSC sale in October 2015, has an estimated overall value of $11.25 billion, with a planned completion date in June 2026.

The Multi-Mission Surface Combatant (MMSC) is a significant addition to Saudi Arabia’s naval capabilities, emphasizing a fully equipped surface combatant with permanent combat systems and weapons. The HMS King Saud’s advanced features, including integrated helicopter and drone capabilities, underscore its enhanced surveillance and engagement capabilities. Lockheed Martin’s COMBATSS-21 combat management system, along with a range of sophisticated sensors and weapons, further enhance the frigate’s operational effectiveness.
