Seaboard Marine Integrates LNG-Fueled Containerships into Fleet
Seaboard Marine's LNG-Fueled Fleet Expansion
Seaboard Marine, a Miami-based shipping carrier, is making significant strides in sustainable shipping. The company is integrating a new class of innovative LNG-fueled containerships into its fleet that services South America. This move highlights the carrier’s commitment to environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. The first two vessels of the new V-Class have already joined the fleet, with a total of six ships expected to be operational by the end of 2025. This expansion reflects a broader trend among U.S. carriers embracing LNG technology to reduce their environmental impact.
Innovative Design and Features of the V-Class
The new V-Class vessels are designed by HB Hunte of Germany and built by Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering Company in China. These ships are notable for their advanced features and increased capacity. The original order for these vessels was expanded in 2023, allowing Seaboard Marine to add three more ships to its fleet. This expansion emphasizes the company’s commitment to modernizing its operations and enhancing its service offerings.
One of the standout features of the V-Class vessels is the adoption of double C-type vertical gas tanks. These tanks are reported to be the largest of their kind ever deployed on a ship. The design also includes a new bow arrangement, which contributes to improved fuel efficiency and performance. The dual-fuel engines, MAN B&W 7570ME-C10, can operate on either LNG or marine gas oil (MGO). Each vessel is equipped with two diesel generators and one LNG generator, ensuring flexibility and reliability in various operational conditions.
Seaboard Marine’s President and CEO, Eddie Gonzalez, expressed excitement about the arrival of the Seaboard Victory, the second ship in the V-Class series. He stated that this vessel marks a significant milestone in the company’s efforts to enhance sustainability while delivering exceptional service to customers. The Seaboard Victory recently made its first port calls in Callao and Pisco, Peru, joining a route that connects the U.S., the Caribbean, Central, and South America.

Commitment to Sustainability and Future Plans
Seaboard Marine’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its recent decisions to adopt LNG-fueled vessels. The company introduced its first LNG-fueled vessel, the Seaboard Blue, in 2023. This ship, originally built in 2011, was retrofitted for LNG operations in 2017. It became the first LNG cargo ship to bunker at PortMiami, Florida, before embarking on its inaugural journey to Honduras and Guatemala. This milestone underscores Seaboard’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing cleaner energy sources.
By the end of 2025, Seaboard Marine plans to have a total of eight LNG-powered vessels in its fleet. This expansion aligns with a growing trend in the shipping industry, where LNG-fueled containerships are becoming increasingly common. According to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insight database, there are currently 127 LNG-fueled containerships in service, with an additional 314 on order. Projections indicate that by 2028, over 400 LNG-fueled containerships will be operational. This shift towards LNG is not only beneficial for the environment but also enhances operational efficiency, making it a preferred choice for many shipping companies.
