Seadrill rig pair hired for drilling programs in the US Gulf of Mexico

Seadrill Secures New Contracts in Gulf of Mexico

Seadrill, a prominent offshore rig owner, has announced significant contract wins for two of its rigs in the US Gulf of Mexico. The drillship West Vela and the semisubmersible rig Sevan Louisiana have both been awarded contracts that enhance Seadrill’s operational portfolio in the region. These developments come as the company reports a robust order backlog of approximately $2.5 billion.

Details of the New Contracts

The West Vela, a drillship built in 2013, has secured a two-well contract with Talos Energy. This contract is set to commence in mid-November 2025 and will last for 90 days. Currently, the West Vela is engaged in a separate $73.5 million contract with Talos, which began in February 2025 and is scheduled to conclude in September 2025. This ongoing partnership highlights the strong relationship between Seadrill and Talos Energy, as both companies continue to collaborate on offshore drilling projects.

In addition to the West Vela, the Sevan Louisiana, another 2013-built rig, has been awarded a three-well contract by Murphy Oil. This contract commenced earlier this month and is expected to run until November 2025. The addition of these contracts not only strengthens Seadrill’s presence in the Gulf of Mexico but also reflects the growing demand for offshore drilling services in the region.

Seadrill’s Growing Order Backlog

As of August 6, 2025, Seadrill reported an impressive order backlog of approximately $2.5 billion. This backlog indicates a strong demand for the company’s drilling services and positions Seadrill favorably within the competitive offshore drilling market. The recent contract awards are a testament to the company’s operational capabilities and its commitment to meeting the needs of its clients in the energy sector.

With these new contracts, Seadrill is poised to enhance its operational efficiency and continue its growth trajectory in the offshore drilling industry. The company remains focused on delivering high-quality services while navigating the challenges of the evolving energy landscape.
