Seattle’s I-5 Ship Canal Bridge Repair Project Begins

Seattle's I-5 Ship Canal Bridge Undergoes Major Repairs

Construction has officially commenced on the Interstate 5 Ship Canal Bridge in Seattle, with significant traffic adjustments in place. Northbound lanes have been reduced to two until August 15 as part of the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) $203 million Revive I-5 project, aimed at preserving this vital infrastructure. The bridge, which accommodates nearly 240,000 vehicles daily, is receiving critical repairs for the first time in over four decades.

Critical Repairs and Traffic Adjustments

The Ship Canal Bridge, built in the 1960s, has been the focus of over 200 emergency repairs since 2019, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive maintenance. This week, Atkinson Construction began resurfacing up to 20% of the northbound bridge deck, repairing five expansion joints, and upgrading drainage systems to enhance safety and functionality.

To manage the ongoing construction, I-5 express lanes will remain operational in the northbound direction around the clock until August 18. However, southbound drivers should prepare for delays, as express lane access will be restricted during morning rush hours. From August 15 to 18, all northbound lanes between Interstate 90 and Northeast 45th Street will be closed to facilitate the removal of the work zone, with all lanes expected to reopen early on August 18.

Future Construction Plans and Considerations

Looking ahead, additional construction phases are scheduled for late 2025 and 2027, which will also involve reductions in southbound lanes. Notably, work will be paused during the 2026 FIFA World Cup to minimize disruptions for the influx of visitors. WSDOT is advising drivers to plan their routes carefully, anticipate regional traffic impacts, and consider alternative transportation options during this period of significant infrastructure improvement.

As the project progresses, WSDOT remains committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of one of Washington’s busiest freeway segments, emphasising the importance of these long-term enhancements for the community.
