Ship It Zero coalition has praised IKEA for efforts in maritime shipping decarbonization

Pacific Environment’s Ship It Zero coalition has praised IKEA for its ongoing efforts in maritime shipping decarbonization. The acknowledgment comes after the release of IKEA’s FY24 Climate and Sustainability reports. As a leader in green shipping, Pacific Environment urges IKEA to inspire other retailers to adopt zero-emission ships and commit to genuinely green fuels.
IKEA’s Progress and Future Goals
Jonathan Butler, Climate Campaign Manager for Pacific Environment and representative of the Ship It Zero campaign, expressed appreciation for IKEA’s commitment to reducing emissions in maritime shipping. He highlighted that shipping has long relied on fossil fuels, which pose risks to public health, the environment, and the climate. However, Butler cautioned that biofuels are not a sustainable solution. He called on IKEA to adopt more ambitious goals regarding green maritime fuels.
Butler emphasized the need for substantial efforts to achieve zero-emission maritime shipping. He noted that while IKEA is investing in transitional systems and infrastructure, such as the “book and claim” model for alternative fuels, these measures are not enough. The health of communities and the planet demands more significant actions to align with scientific timelines for decarbonization.
In November 2024, the Ship It Zero campaign will release its 2024 Retailer Shipping Decarbonization Progress Reports. These reports will evaluate IKEA, LG, Samsung, and Home Depot on their performance in 2025. The previous report indicated that IKEA had made significant strides in decarbonizing its maritime logistics, earning a B+ in the 2023 Decarbonization Report Card, the highest score among its peers.
Despite these achievements, the Ship It Zero coalition insists that IKEA must align its actions with its stated ambitions. The coalition encourages IKEA to collaborate with other retailers and actively negotiate with carriers to transport goods using shore power-equipped ships. The call to action is clear: IKEA must step up and lead the retail sector toward a zero-emission shipping future.
About Pacific Environment
Pacific Environment works to stop climate change and ensure healthy ecosystems around the Pacific Rim for the benefit of people and our planet. We campaign to stop climate change by working to fast-track key industries toward zero carbon emissions. We focus on major global industries that have received less public attention but whose carbon emissions are significant and still growing: the maritime shipping and the petrochemical (plastics) industries.
About Ship It Zero
Ship It Zero is a climate and public health campaign to move the world’s largest retail companies to 100% zero-emission ocean shipping. We are pushing corporations to take responsibility for their ocean shipping pollution and lead the way to climate-friendly, clean-air shipping practices.
