Singapore helps rescue 30 people after fishing vessel

Singapore Leads Dramatic Rescue of Capsized Fishing Crew

On Tuesday morning, Singapore successfully coordinated the rescue of 30 individuals from a capsized fishing vessel, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The incident occurred approximately 27 kilometers northeast of Pedra Branca, within Singapore’s designated maritime search and rescue area. The MPA was alerted to the situation by the Hong Kong-registered container ship, Cosco Development, around 7:20 AM.

Coordinated Efforts for a Swift Rescue

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) took immediate action upon receiving the distress call. They initiated a comprehensive search and rescue operation, issuing navigational broadcasts to alert other vessels in the vicinity. This proactive approach aimed to ensure the safety of those stranded in the water and to facilitate a swift response.

In addition to coordinating local efforts, the MRCC reached out to Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency and Malaysia’s MRCC for support. The collaboration among these agencies was crucial in managing the situation effectively. Singapore directed the Liberia-registered bulk carrier, Andros Spirit, to assist in the rescue operation. Thanks to these coordinated efforts, all 30 crew members from the Indonesian-registered vessel, Facific Memory II, were successfully rescued.

After their rescue, the individuals were safely disembarked at Batam, Indonesia. The MPA confirmed that no Singaporeans were involved in the incident, highlighting the effectiveness of the international maritime cooperation in responding to emergencies at sea.
