Singapore’s Global Energy Trading and Towngas Partner for Green Methanol

Singapore’s Global Energy Trading and The Hong Kong and China Gas Company (Towngas) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to create green methanol supply solutions for the shipping industry in Asia. This partnership aims to enhance the availability of sustainable fuel options, supporting the maritime sector’s transition towards decarbonization.

Innovative Production and Supply Chain Collaboration

Towngas operates a methanol production plant in Ordos, Inner Mongolia. This facility utilizes proprietary technology to convert biomass and municipal waste into green methanol. This innovative approach not only addresses waste management but also contributes to the production of renewable energy sources. Towngas plans to expand its production capabilities across China, targeting regions such as Inner Mongolia, the Greater Bay Area, and Hainan. The company aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes of green fuel and chemical supplies.

On the other hand, Global Energy has established itself as a leader in the bunkering sector. In 2024, the company delivered over 4.7 million tonnes of bunkers and became the first in Singapore to operate dedicated bunkering tankers for methanol. This strategic move positions Global Energy as a key player in the green fuel market. The company has already conducted several successful operations in the region, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable practices.

According to Loh Hong-leong, managing director of Global Energy, this collaboration represents “synergy in motion.” He emphasized that the partnership will create a one-stop bunkering solution, making green methanol more accessible to the maritime industry. Beyond supply, Global Energy plans to offer advisory services on compliance and the benefits of using green methanol. Sham Man-fai, chief operating officer of green fuels and chemicals at Towngas, echoed this sentiment, stating that the collaboration will accelerate the shipping industry’s decarbonization journey by combining their strengths in production and supply chain management.
