SMM 2024: DNV awards Wallenius Wilhelmsen first B100 verification for biofuel insetting
DNV Awards Wallenius Wilhelmsen First Biofuel Insetting Verification, Marking Progress in Shipping Decarbonization
At the SMM trade fair, DNV issued its first biofuel insetting verification statement to Wallenius Wilhelmsen, recognizing the company’s use of 100% biofuel (B100) on a recent voyage. This milestone highlights Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with DNV verifying the emissions reduction achieved using biofuel on the Morning Post vehicle carrier. The biofuel, derived entirely from sustainable sources and bunkered at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, led to a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions on a well-to-wake basis.
Biofuel insetting creates transparency across the supply chain by utilizing a “book and claim” system, enabling shipping companies to verify their sustainability efforts. By working with DNV, Wallenius Wilhelmsen can ensure its investments in sustainable fuels deliver real emission reductions. This collaboration represents a significant step towards the shipping industry’s broader goal of decarbonization, with biofuels playing a key role in reducing GHG emissions.

The new verification process developed by DNV includes tracking emissions baselines, validating the insetting process, and issuing verification statements. As shipping companies face increasing regulatory pressures, the ability to offer independently verified emission reductions will help build trust with customers and pave the way for greener, more sustainable shipping practices.
