SMM 2024: DNV celebrates advances in ship autonomy

DNV Marks Key Milestones in Autonomous Shipping Development at SMM Trade Fair

At this week’s SMM trade fair, DNV highlighted significant progress in autonomous shipping technology through collaborations with industry leaders. Ocean Infinity, Avikus, and Reach Subsea were recognized for their ongoing partnerships with DNV, receiving certifications and approvals that mark advancements in the use of autonomous and remotely operated vessels. These developments are crucial as the maritime industry seeks to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability through innovative technologies.

Autonomous shipping technology, while still in its early stages, is rapidly evolving. It encompasses a wide range of systems, from decision-making aids and speed control to fully unmanned vessel operations. However, this innovation requires strong collaboration between stakeholders to ensure its potential is fully realized. DNV, as a leader in maritime classification, is playing a pivotal role by developing guidelines and class notations to keep pace with these advancements. These frameworks aim to ensure that autonomous vessels meet high safety standards, even in the absence of formal regulatory structures.

One notable achievement celebrated at SMM was Ocean Infinity’s receipt of a Statement of Compliance from DNV for its remotely supported vessel operations. This recognition makes Ocean Infinity’s vessel fleet the first of its kind to meet the required technological standards, paving the way for the onshoring of marine tasks. In addition, Avikus, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, and Reach Subsea both made strides in their autonomous projects, with Reach’s unmanned survey vessel and Avikus’ HiNAS decision support system undergoing further testing and certification under DNV’s guidelines.

DNV continues to lead the way in establishing international standards for autonomous maritime operations. Through ongoing collaborations with innovative companies, DNV aims to ensure that autonomous and remotely operated vessels achieve safety standards that surpass those of conventional ships, guiding the industry toward a more efficient and sustainable future.
