SMM opens in Hamburg with shipbuilding riding near-record wave

The highly anticipated Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology (SMM) trade fair has kicked off today in Hamburg, attracting maritime professionals from around the world. With over 50,000 attendees and 2,300 exhibitors from 70 countries, the event promises to showcase the latest trends and innovations in the maritime sector.

Industry Priorities Shift Towards Autonomy and Security

This year’s SMM conference, themed “Autonomy & Security: Shaping a Resilient and Intelligent Maritime Future,” highlights the industry’s evolving focus on maritime security and technological advancements. Sessions will delve into topics such as automation, cybersecurity, and the transition from traditional shipbuilding methods to digital solutions.

Global Shipbuilding Landscape Sees Significant Growth

According to Clarksons Research, the global newbuilding orderbook has surged by 33% since the last SMM in 2024, reaching a staggering $666 billion. This growth is expected to benefit marine equipment suppliers significantly, with around 60% of the total orderbook projected to translate into equipment orders.

Shipbuilding output has also witnessed a resurgence, with average yard backlogs extending up to four years. Delivery positions for 2030 are already becoming the norm in certain sectors, signaling a robust demand for new vessels in the coming years.

China Dominates Shipbuilding Market

In a notable shift from previous years, Chinese shipbuilding output has seen a substantial increase of 39%, outpacing the rest of the world by a significant margin. China now commands around 70% of global order intake and is spearheading approximately 75% of the shipyard capacity expansion projects tracked by Clarksons.

Despite the industry’s current success, there are reminders of past market cycles. The global orderbook stands at around 22% of the existing fleet, a stark contrast to the levels seen during the 2008 financial crisis. However, strong contracting activity in sectors like container shipping and VLCCs is driving record orders and boosting market confidence.

As the SMM unfolds, the ClarkSea Index remains robust, exceeding $40,000 a day and reaching its highest level in history. Disruptions in key shipping lanes, such as the Strait of Hormuz, have further bolstered market dynamics, setting the stage for engaging discussions and fruitful collaborations at the prestigious maritime event in Hamburg.
