Sonangol Expands LNG Shipping Fleet with New Order

Angola’s state-controlled energy company, Sonangol, is set to enhance its liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipping capabilities by placing an order for a new LNG carrier in South Korea. The contract has been awarded to HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, which will construct a vessel with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters. The deal, valued at KRW 357.5 billion (approximately $245 million), is expected to be completed by June 2028.

This new addition will increase Sonangol’s fleet of gas carriers, which currently consists of five vessels. Among these, three LNG carriers were built in 2011 by Hanwha Ocean, previously known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. The remainder of Sonangol’s fleet primarily includes crude and product tankers. This strategic move underscores Sonangol’s commitment to expanding its LNG-related shipping capacity as Angola aims to bolster its position in gas exports and downstream logistics.

Strengthening Ties with South Korean Shipyards

The contract with HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries also reflects the ongoing relationship between Sonangol and South Korean shipyards. Historically, Sonangol has sourced its LNG fleet from Hanwha Ocean, and this latest order continues that trend, keeping Angola’s LNG tonnage closely linked to South Korea’s shipbuilding industry. South Korea has long been recognized as a global leader in the construction of LNG carriers, making it a reliable partner for Sonangol’s newbuild projects.

The South Korean shipbuilding sector remains active in the LNG carrier market. Recently, Seapeak ordered two LNG carriers from Samsung Heavy Industries, while Purus has returned to the yard with a pair of LNG newbuildings valued at around $503 million. Additionally, Alpha Gas has placed an order for two LNG carriers at Hanwha Ocean. Samsung Heavy Industries has also announced a $507.6 million contract for two LNG carriers for a Bermuda-based owner, with delivery expected in early 2029. This flurry of activity highlights the robust demand for LNG carriers and the pivotal role South Korean shipyards play in meeting this demand.

US Navy Considers Korean Shipyards for Fleet Expansion

Sonangol’s latest order marks a significant step in its efforts to expand its LNG shipping capabilities, reinforcing its strategic partnerships with leading shipbuilders in South Korea. As Angola continues to develop its gas export capacity, the new vessel will play a crucial role in enhancing the country’s position in the global LNG market.
