South Korean Shipbuilders Sound Alarm as China Snatches 57.8% of Global LNG

In the world of shipbuilding, a significant shift is underway as Chinese shipbuilders make strides in the LNG carrier market, posing a potential threat to South Korean dominance. Recent reports from South Korean media highlight growing concerns within the industry that Chinese shipbuilders may soon seize control of the LNG carrier market.

Rise of Chinese Shipbuilders in LNG Carrier Sector

According to the “First Half of 2026 Market Report” by U.S. shipping analysis firm Besson Nautical, the first half of 2026 saw a total of 90 new LNG carrier orders worldwide. Chinese shipbuilders secured 52 vessels, capturing a market share of 57.8%, while South Korean shipbuilders secured 37 vessels, holding 41.1% of the market. This marked a significant shift from the previous year, where South Korea lost its top spot in LNG carrier orders to China.

The Evolution of LNG Carrier Market Dynamics

Traditionally, Japanese shipbuilders dominated the LNG carrier market from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s, leveraging advanced technology to secure global orders. However, South Korean shipbuilders emerged as key players in the mid-2000s, dominating the market with government support and price competitiveness. Chinese shipbuilders entered the sector later but rapidly closed the gap with their South Korean counterparts, marking a milestone for China’s shipbuilding industry.

Challenges and Strategies for South Korean Shipbuilders

As Chinese shipbuilders continue to advance in the LNG carrier market, South Korean shipbuilders are facing challenges in maintaining their market share. With over 70% of the world’s LNG carriers built by South Korean giants, the industry is now at risk of being overtaken by China. Capacity constraints and a surge in new orders have further complicated the situation for South Korean shipbuilders, prompting them to explore overseas shipbuilding bases and focus on high-value-added vessels like LNG carriers.

Looking Ahead: A Changing Landscape in Shipbuilding

Industry insiders acknowledge the changing dynamics in the shipbuilding sector, with Chinese shipbuilders rapidly narrowing the technological gap with South Korea in LNG carriers. To stay competitive, South Korean shipbuilders must explore new high-value-added sectors beyond LNG carriers and adapt to the evolving market landscape.

As Chinese shipbuilders continue to strengthen their presence in the LNG carrier market, the future of shipbuilding industry dynamics remains uncertain. South Korean shipbuilders face the challenge of balancing capacity constraints and market competition while striving to maintain their position in the evolving global shipbuilding arena.
