Star Bulk clears out more supramaxes in ongoing fleet overhaul
Star Bulk Carriers Sells Vessels to Boost Fleet Efficiency

Star Bulk Carriers, a prominent player in the Greek dry bulk shipping sector, has taken significant steps to modernize its fleet by selling off several older vessels. In its recent second-quarter earnings report, the Nasdaq-listed company announced the sale of a combination of supramax and kamsarmax bulk carriers, aiming to enhance its operational efficiency and financial flexibility.
Details of the Vessel Sales
The vessels sold include the Star Nighthawk, Star Runner, Star Danai, Star Goal, Star Sandpiper, Star Owl, Oriole, and Star Georgia. Notably, the Star Georgia is the only kamsarmax in this group, having been built in 2006, while the majority of the supramax vessels were constructed in 2011. The Star Owl, Oriole, and Star Georgia have already been delivered to their new owners, with the remaining vessels expected to complete their transfers by the end of 2025.
Star Bulk Carriers anticipates generating approximately $104 million in gross proceeds from these sales, which will be realized during the third and fourth quarters of the year. Chief Executive Petros Pappas emphasized the company’s strategy to refine its fleet by divesting vessels that no longer align with its commercial objectives. This move is expected to strengthen the company’s cash reserves and position it for future opportunities.
Strategic Fleet Repositioning
With a fleet of over 140 bulk carriers and a total capacity of 14.2 million deadweight tons (dwt), Star Bulk Carriers has been proactive in reshaping its operational profile. So far in 2025, the company has sold more than ten supramax vessels, reflecting its commitment to repositioning its fleet and enhancing financial flexibility. The total financial flexibility is projected to exceed $520 million, providing the company with ample resources for future investments and growth initiatives.
This strategic approach not only aims to improve the efficiency of Star Bulk’s operations but also positions the company favorably in a competitive market. As the shipping industry continues to evolve, Star Bulk Carriers is taking decisive actions to ensure its fleet remains modern and capable of meeting the demands of its clients.
