US infrastructure investor Stonepeak has announced a significant joint venture with French shipping giant CMA CGM, valued at nearly $10 billion. This partnership, named United Ports, will encompass ten of CMA CGM’s terminals located across the globe. Stonepeak is investing $2.4 billion for a 25% minority stake in this venture, marking a strategic move in the maritime logistics sector.
The terminals included in this joint venture span several key locations worldwide. They are the Fenix Marine Services in Los Angeles, Port Liberty terminals in New York and Bayonne, Santos terminals in Brazil, and multiple terminals in Spain, including CSP Valencia, CSP Bilbao, TTI Algeciras, and Terminal Maritima del Guadalquivir. Additionally, the venture will cover the Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal in India, CMA CGM Kaohsiung Terminal in Taiwan, and Gemalink in Cai Mep, Vietnam. This diverse portfolio highlights the global reach and strategic importance of the partnership.
Long-Term Collaboration and Future Investments
The announcement of this joint venture signifies the beginning of a long-term relationship between Stonepeak and CMA CGM. According to James Wyper, senior managing director at Stonepeak, container terminals are vital to global trade and represent some of the most challenging infrastructure assets to replicate. This collaboration not only strengthens their current operations but also lays the groundwork for future investments and terminal projects both in the United States and internationally.
As part of the agreement, Stonepeak will have the opportunity to contribute an additional $3.6 billion towards future joint terminal projects. This potential for further investment underscores the commitment of both companies to enhance their operational capabilities and expand their global footprint in the maritime sector. The transaction is anticipated to close in the second half of 2026, setting the stage for a transformative period in terminal operations.
