Swedish Navy Boosted by New Vessel Contract

Spanish shipbuilder C.N.P. Freire has secured a significant contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to construct four advanced naval support vessels. Each vessel, measuring 47 meters in length, is designed to enhance Sweden’s maritime logistical capabilities and operational readiness in challenging conditions. With a focus on sustainability, these ships will feature diesel-electric propulsion systems that optimize fuel consumption and minimize emissions.

Advanced Features for Harsh Environments

The newly commissioned vessels will operate at a top speed of 12 knots and have an impressive operational endurance of 10 days, accommodating a crew of 16 personnel. Their design prioritizes reliability in ice-covered waters, ensuring that the Swedish Navy can maintain operational effectiveness even in the harshest maritime environments. This contract underscores Sweden’s commitment to modernizing its naval fleet while emphasizing efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Once delivered, these vessels will significantly bolster the FMV’s ability to respond to various maritime challenges. The focus on environmentally sustainable operations reflects a broader trend in military procurement, where reducing the ecological footprint is becoming increasingly important. The integration of advanced technologies in these vessels is expected to enhance Sweden’s naval capabilities, allowing for more effective logistical support in diverse operational scenarios.

Freire’s Expanding Portfolio

In addition to the Swedish contract, Freire is also making strides in its home market. The shipbuilder has commenced construction on a new diver support vessel for the Spanish Navy, aimed at supporting underwater training and intervention operations for the Military Diving School. The keel-laying ceremony for this vessel took place in November 2025 in Vigo, with delivery anticipated later in 2026.

This Spanish Navy project incorporates advanced systems, including dynamic positioning and hyperbaric facilities, alongside environmentally conscious technologies. Freire’s growing role in supplying specialized vessels to military customers both domestically and internationally highlights its commitment to innovation and quality in naval construction. As the demand for modern naval support vessels increases, Freire is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of military forces around the globe.
