Singapore Seeks Electric Patrol Craft Designs to Go Green and Go Smart
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is inviting proposals for new electric patrol boats. This is part of its mission to make maritime operations more environmentally friendly and use smarter technology. The MPA has released an Expression of Interest (EOI) for companies to submit ideas and plans for building these electric boats.

Why Singapore Wants Electric Boats
The MPA aims to cut down pollution by switching to electric-powered patrol boats. At the same time, these boats will use digital tools to make work easier and more efficient. This is all part of Singapore’s larger efforts to decarbonise and modernise its maritime industry.
What the New Boats Need
The patrol boats need to meet some key requirements to ensure safety and performance. Here’s what companies must focus on in their designs:
- Safety Features:
- A battery management system to monitor the power supply.
- Special compartments to keep the batteries secure, preventing fire, water, or gas leaks.
- Cooling systems to stop the batteries from overheating.
- Charging and Battery Solutions:
- Boats must be designed for quick charging and easy battery replacement so they can stay in use for long periods.
- Smart and Autonomous Features:
- The boats should have remote operation abilities, meaning they can be controlled from a control center onshore.
- Collision detection systems to avoid accidents at sea.
- Lightweight Design:
- Using light but strong materials will help the boats maintain speed, stability, and energy efficiency without compromising safety.
