Terminal Operator Berths Largest General Cargo Vessel At Tin

Historic Cargo Vessel Berths at Lagos Port

Ports & Cargo Handling Services Limited (PCHSL), a subsidiary of SIFAX Group, has marked a significant achievement with the arrival of the IPSARION, the largest general cargo vessel to dock at its Tin Can Island terminal in Lagos. This Malta-flagged bulk carrier is delivering a wide array of cargo, including construction equipment, vehicles, and industrial machinery, showcasing PCHSL’s expanding operational capabilities.

Strategic Expansion in Cargo Handling

The IPSARION measures an impressive 199.99 meters in length and boasts a gross tonnage of 36,560. Built by Tsuneishi Heavy Industries in Cebu, Philippines, the vessel is managed by Helikon Shipping Enterprises Ltd, with Yake Bulk Limited serving as its operator. Olumuyiwa Akande, the Group Head of Corporate Communications, highlighted the vessel’s significance in PCHSL’s strategic shift towards handling general cargo, a move that reflects the company’s readiness to diversify its services beyond traditional container traffic.

John Jenkins, Managing Director of PCHSL, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “For a long time, our terminal primarily serviced container vessels. However, we recently made a strategic business decision to diversify and welcome general cargo vessels.” He noted that while handling general cargo is not entirely new for the company, they are reactivating this line of business with enhanced expertise and equipment. Jenkins expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing unloading operations, which he believes will demonstrate PCHSL’s capacity to manage high-volume cargo effectively.

The successful handling of the IPSARION not only reinforces SIFAX Group’s position in Nigeria’s maritime sector but also highlights its commitment to contributing to the nation’s economic growth through efficient port operations. Jenkins remarked that this milestone validates the substantial investments made in port infrastructure and human capital development over the years, setting the stage for future growth and expansion in the industry.
