The Port of Thessaloniki becomes the first port in the EU

Thessaloniki Port Leads in Maritime Decarbonization

In a significant step towards maritime decarbonization, the Port of Thessaloniki (ThPA S.A.) has become the first port in the EU and the Mediterranean to implement RightShip’s Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP). This initiative is part of the HELMEPA-led METAVASEA project, supported by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The one-year pilot program aims to set a new standard for sustainability in the region by providing insights into value chain emissions and enabling data-driven actions to reduce environmental impact.

Pioneering Sustainability Efforts

ThPA S.A. is committed to sustainability as a core aspect of its operations. The integration of the MEP allows the port to track emissions from incoming vessels, offering vital data on their environmental impact. Athanasios Liagkos, Executive Chairman of ThPA S.A., emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that it supports greener practices within the maritime industry. The port not only focuses on its operations but also engages with the local community to align its business practices with environmental, social, and governance principles.

HELMEPA leads the METAVASEA project, which brings together various maritime stakeholders to enhance decarbonization efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean. Olga Stavropoulou, Director General of HELMEPA, noted that the initiative aims to improve operational efficiency in ports and shipping while assessing the industry’s readiness for new fuels. Andrew Roberts, Rightship’s Executive Director for EMEA and Americas, highlighted the transformative potential of technology in achieving a cleaner maritime future. He stated that the MEP has become an essential tool for ports worldwide, providing the necessary data to meet environmental targets and improve community health.

The METAVASEA project also focuses on training and re-skilling approximately 1,500 employees in areas such as new fuels, safety culture, and environmental leadership. It aims to raise awareness among students and local communities about maritime decarbonization. By fostering collaboration among shipping companies, port organizations, and educational institutions, the project seeks to create a more sustainable maritime industry in the Eastern Mediterranean. The adoption of the MEP by ThPA S.A. reflects its dedication to aligning operations with global decarbonization goals and stakeholder expectations.
