It allows the submarines to detect and track targets at impressive distances. Royal Navy Captain Ian Hughes noted that the sonar system could track a double-decker bus from about 60 miles away. This capability enhances situational awareness and ensures that the submarines can operate effectively in contested environments.
Additionally, the Astute-class submarines feature a state-of-the-art optronic periscope system. Unlike traditional periscopes, which rely on mirrors and prisms, the new system uses electro-optical sensors to gather high-definition imagery. This innovation reduces the time the submarine is exposed above the water, minimizing the risk of detection. The command team can review the imagery long after the periscope is lowered, providing valuable intelligence for operational planning.
