The World’s Largest and most Environmentally Friendly Car Carrier in the industry named today.
Three years after launching the Aurora Class design, the first vessel, Höegh Aurora, was delivered today at China Merchants Heavy Industry’s yard in Jiangsu, China. This vessel marks a significant advancement in sustainable deep-sea shipping.
Shipping contributes about 3% of global emissions, with 90% from deep-sea transportation. Höegh Autoliners, known for operating the world’s most sustainable PCTC fleet, has initiated a green fleet renewal program, ordering 12 multi-fuel-ready vessels designed for future cargo transportation.
The Aurora Class is pivotal to Höegh Autoliners’ 2040 net-zero emissions goal, embodying the future of deep-sea shipping. These vessels will be the first in the PCTC segment to operate on carbon-neutral ammonia, reducing carbon emissions per car transported by up to 58%.
By 2027, when powered entirely by clean ammonia, the Aurora Class vessels will nearly eliminate all carbon emissions, setting new standards for sustainable deep-sea transportation.
The first Aurora vessel, Höegh Autoliners will begin commercial operations immediately. With a capacity of up to 9,100 cars and enhanced features like solar panels and electric shore power readiness, these vessels are designed for future cargo and sustainable operations.
The Aurora Class represents a collaboration with leading industry partners, aiming to make sustainable shipping a reality. The vessels will initially run on LNG, biofuels, and low-sulfur oil, with a transition to green ammonia by 2027, reducing emissions by nearly 100%.
Through partnerships with leading ammonia producers, Höegh Autoliners is driving demand for sustainable fuels, committed to powering at least 5% of its deep-sea operations with green ammonia by 2030.
The Aurora Class is the result of extensive collaboration with top-tier partners and represents Höegh Autoliners’ most significant innovation in sustainable shipping to date.
