Tokyo Metro and JERA Partner to Achieve Zero Emissions with Solar Energy Deal
Tokyo Metro has taken a big step toward its goal of reducing carbon emissions by partnering with JERA, Japan’s top energy company. Together, they have signed a special solar power agreement called a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This deal will help Tokyo Metro use more clean energy and move closer to a future without pollution.
A Virtual PPA is different from regular electricity buying. Instead of using electricity directly from solar panels at their location, Tokyo Metro will receive certificates that show they are using renewable energy generated elsewhere. Starting in December 2024, solar power facilities owned by JERA will produce 2.4 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each year, equal to the energy needed to power thousands of homes. Over the next 25 years, this will help Tokyo Metro’s headquarters reduce carbon emissions by nearly 936 tons of CO2 annually.
A Green Future for Tokyo Metro
Tokyo Metro’s environmental goal, called Metro CO2 Zero Challenge 2050, aims to cut its CO2 emissions by half by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. To reach this target, the company is using eco-friendly technologies, such as energy-saving trains, solar energy, wind power, and small-scale hydropower. With this new agreement, Tokyo Metro is now using a total of six Virtual PPAs, all focused on using power that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels.
In a first for Japan’s railway industry, Tokyo Metro is also using a special energy tracking system. Created by Granular Energy, this system helps track when and where renewable energy is produced. This real-time tracking makes sure that Tokyo Metro uses renewable energy in the most efficient way possible.
