Trafigura orders four ammonia-powered ships, first one to come in 2027

Commodity trading house Trafigura has ordered four medium gas carrier ships that can be powered by ammonia to cut shipping emissions, with the first vessel to be delivered in 2027, the company said in a statement.

By 2030, Trafigura aims to cut the carbon intensity of its shipping fleet by 25%.

The newbuild vessels will be used to transport liquefied petroleum gas or ammonia, and will each come equipped with a dual-fuel low-carbon ammonia engine.

They will be built at the HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea’s Ulsan.

Trafigura currently manages around 400 ships and handles more than 5,000 voyages a year.

Ammonia is among several alternative fuels that shippers are exploring to reduce carbon emissions.
