Training is key to cutting port and towage emissions

Training Seafarers for a Greener Maritime Industry

In the maritime industry, teaching tug masters, ship captains, and marine pilots to navigate more efficiently can play a big role in lowering fuel use and cutting down emissions. This type of training can help reduce pollution in ports and along coastlines, making the shipping industry greener.

Anna Maria Darmanin, Secretary General of the European Tugowners Association, discussed this connection between crew behavior and emissions reductions at a recent convention in Dubai. She emphasized that training is a crucial part of supporting maritime professionals as they adapt to new environmental standards.

To identify training needs, the association has introduced a questionnaire through the Green Ports Alliance. The information gathered will help develop a specialized training program focused on sustainability. The goal is to cut emissions by 10% through better training for those working in ports.

The European Tugowners Association will share updates on this initiative and other efforts at the upcoming TugTechnology 2025 conference.
