Turkish Shipyards Perform Dual I-Class Frigate Launch

Prof. Haluk Görgün emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “IZMIR (F-516) and IZMIT (F-517), two of the MİLGEM I-Class (ISTIF) frigates, have been successfully launched under the coordination of the Turkish Defence Agency (SSB), in partnership with TAİS and STM.” He noted that these national frigates would showcase Turkiye’s strength on the world’s seas. With a localization rate exceeding 80%, these vessels are equipped with advanced technology systems. The TCG İzmir was launched by Anadolu Shipyard, while the TCG İzmit was launched by Sedef Shipyard. The fourth frigate in the class, TCG İçel (F-518), is currently under construction at Sefine Shipyard and is expected to be launched soon. All three frigates are scheduled for delivery within the same year, further demonstrating the rapid progress of Turkiye’s naval projects.
The I-Class Frigate Program
The I-class Frigate Program aims to replace aging YAVUZ-class frigates in the mid-2020s. Developed under the MILGEM indigenous warship program, the I-class frigates are an enlarged variant of the Ada-class anti-submarine corvette. These new frigates will have approximately 50% increased fuel capacity and operational range compared to their predecessors.
The lead vessel, TCG Istanbul (F-515), joined the Turkish Navy in early 2024. Following this, the TCG İzmir and TCG İzmit are expected to enter service in 2026. These warships represent a significant achievement for the Turkish defense industry, boasting an indigenization rate exceeding 80%.
