U.S. Continues Strikes in Yemen as part of Large-Scale

U.S. Launches Major Offensive Against Houthi Threats

On March 15, 2025, U.S. forces initiated a significant military campaign targeting Houthi positions in Yemen, aiming to neutralize threats to international shipping. This operation follows President Donald Trump’s commitment to employ “overwhelming lethal force” against the Iran-backed rebel group. As the strikes continue into their third day, U.S. officials emphasize the campaign’s relentless nature until the Houthis cease their attacks on maritime routes.

Details of the Military Operation

The U.S. military’s operation commenced with a series of airstrikes and missile launches aimed at degrading the Houthis’ capabilities. According to Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, Joint Staff Director for Operations, the initial wave targeted over 30 sites, including terrorist training facilities, drone infrastructure, and weapons storage areas. The strikes utilized F/A-18 Super Hornets from the USS Harry S. Truman and Tomahawk missiles from U.S. Navy vessels, marking a shift in strategy with the use of standoff weapons like the AGM-154C Joint Stand-Off Weapon.

The Houthis responded with an attempted attack on the USS Truman, reportedly launching 18 ballistic and cruise missiles, along with drones. U.S. Air Force fighter jets were deployed to intercept these threats, successfully downing several drones. The ongoing conflict has seen the Houthis engage in over 174 attempts against U.S. Navy assets and 145 against commercial vessels since 2023, highlighting the persistent danger they pose to maritime security.

Strategic Objectives and Future Implications

The U.S. campaign aims to continue until the Houthis halt their assaults on shipping lanes. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that the operation would persist as long as the rebel group remains a threat. U.S. officials anticipate that strikes could occur nearly daily for weeks, with the Houthis vowing to retaliate against U.S. actions.

The ongoing Houthi attacks have raised concerns about security in one of the world’s most vital shipping corridors. Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized the Houthis as “a band of pirates” wielding precision weaponry, emphasizing the unsustainable nature of their control over shipping routes. The U.S. military’s proactive approach contrasts with previous reactive measures, focusing on preemptive strikes against Houthi leadership and infrastructure.

President Trump has issued a stern warning to the Houthis and Iran, stating that any threats to international shipping will not go unpunished. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for escalation as both sides prepare for continued conflict in the region.
