U.S. Navy Commissions Its Latest Destroyer, USS John Basilone, In New York
The USS John Basilone (DDG 122), a powerful new ship in the United States Navy, was officially welcomed during a special ceremony in New York on November 9, 2024. This ship is part of the Arleigh Burke-class, which is known for its advanced technology and ability to handle different types of missions. The USS John Basilone is a guided-missile destroyer, meaning it can fight in the air, on the water’s surface, and even underwater. This flexibility makes it a strong asset for the Navy.
The ship is named after Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, a legendary Marine who became a hero during World War II. He earned the Medal of Honor, a top military award, for his bravery in the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942. Later, Basilone fought courageously at the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945, where he lost his life. For his bravery there, he was also awarded the Navy Cross, making him the only enlisted Marine to receive both the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross.
During the ceremony, Carlos Del Toro, the Secretary of the Navy, gave a speech to honor Basilone’s courage and sacrifice. He shared that the USS John Basilone will carry on the spirit of Basilone and represent all the brave men and women who have served in the Navy. Del Toro said, “Basilone’s valor represents the best of America.”
Several other leaders attended the ceremony. Admiral Daryl Caudle, who leads the U.S. Fleet Forces Command, and Lieutenant General Roberta Shea both gave speeches. Diane Hawkins, who is Basilone’s niece, also shared her thoughts, showing how proud she was of her uncle’s legacy. Charles F. Krugh, President of General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, spoke as well, since his company helped build this impressive ship.
The USS John Basilone has two special “sponsors” — Ryan Manion and Amy Looney. They are leaders of the Travis Manion Foundation, an organization that supports veterans and families of fallen soldiers. Their foundation also teaches young people about good character and leadership.
Carlos Ruiz, the 20th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, called Basilone a “true Marine Corps legend” who showed strength, loyalty, and bravery. He said, “No Marine showed more perseverance and loyalty than Gunnery Sergeant Basilone.”

The USS John Basilone will continue his legacy, inspiring current and future members of the Navy and honoring those who have given their lives for the country.
With its advanced weapons and technology, the USS John Basilone is ready to take on missions of all kinds, helping to keep the United States safe in the air, on the sea, and underwater. This new addition to the Navy fleet is a fitting tribute to Gunnery Sergeant Basilone and a powerful reminder of his bravery and dedication to his country.
