Udupi Cochin Shipyard bags order for eight tugs from Adani Ports & SEZ
Udupi Cochin Shipyard Secures Major Tug Order
Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (Udupi-CSL), a subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), has recently secured a significant order for eight 70-tonne bollard pull ASD (azimuthing stern drive) tugs. This order comes from Adani Ports & SEZ through its subsidiary, Ocean Sparkle Limited. This development marks a notable achievement for Udupi-CSL, which has been making strides since its revival in 2020. The new order adds to the three similar tugs already under construction for Ocean Sparkle Limited, showcasing the growing demand for advanced tugboats in the maritime industry.
Details of the Tug Order
The eight tugs ordered by Ocean Sparkle Limited will each have a length of 33 meters, a beam of 12.2 meters, and a draft of 4.2 meters. These vessels will be powered by two main engines, each delivering 1838 kW of power, and will utilize 2.7-meter propellers for propulsion. The design of these tugs comes from a leading global design house specializing in harbor tugs. This collaboration ensures that the vessels meet high standards of performance and reliability.
Moreover, the tugs will adhere to the approved standard tug design and specifications (ASTDS) established by the Centre for promoting Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiatives. Udupi-CSL has been actively involved in initial projects under this scheme, demonstrating its commitment to enhancing local manufacturing capabilities. This order not only strengthens Udupi-CSL’s position in the market but also contributes to the broader goal of self-reliance in India’s maritime sector.
Revival and Future Prospects
Since its takeover in 2020, Udupi-CSL has undergone a remarkable transformation. Under the guidance of Cochin Shipyard Limited, the yard has turned around its operations and significantly increased its order book, which now exceeds ₹2,000 crore. This revival is a testament to the effective management and strategic planning implemented by CSL.
Madhu S. Nair, the chairman and managing director of CSL, emphasized the company’s commitment to quality and timely delivery of tugs constructed in India. He also highlighted the upcoming Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), which aims to introduce battery electric tugs into the industry. This initiative reflects CSL’s dedication to innovation and sustainability in maritime operations. As Udupi-CSL continues to grow, it is poised to play a crucial role in the future of India’s tugboat manufacturing and the broader maritime industry.
