UK Gov pledges support to shipbuilders with UK-only shipbuilding contracts

Chancellor John Healey has made a significant announcement, signaling a new era of industrialization for Britain. The government has pledged substantial support for two major maritime projects that will be constructed in British shipyards.

Support for British Shipbuilding Industry

British shipyards are set to play a pivotal role in two maritime projects valued at billions of pounds. Former defense secretary, John Healey, confirmed that these multi-billion pound projects will be executed by British workers, providing vital support for jobs and a network of small British businesses.

Healey, who previously served as the secretary of state for defense from July 5, 2024, to June 11, 2026, emphasized the government’s commitment to bolstering Britain’s shipbuilding industry.

Programme Euston and New Marine Research Vessel

One of the key initiatives announced is Programme Euston, a project aimed at constructing three new floating docks for the Royal Navy’s submarine service at HM Naval Base Clyde. Through a UK-only competition, these new facilities will facilitate essential maintenance for the UK’s current and future fleet of nuclear submarines, enabling crucial inspections, upgrades, and repairs.

Defense secretary Wes Streeting highlighted the significance of Programme Euston, stating that it will modernize HM Naval Base Clyde while supporting British shipyards, workers, and engineering capabilities. Additionally, the Chancellor has committed funding for a new marine research vessel to be built in a British shipyard, which will benefit coastal communities, sustainable fishing practices, and long-term economic growth.

Backing British Industries for National Security and Economic Growth

Scheduled to be operational in the early 2030s, the new marine research vessel will continue to advance core research efforts, replacing the current vessel that is approaching the end of its service life. Both projects, as announced, will be carried out by UK companies.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey, emphasized the importance of supporting British shipyards, stating that each pound of strategic investment in this critical sector will contribute to British jobs and businesses nationwide. He highlighted that by backing British shipyards, the government is not only enhancing national security but also ensuring resilience in industries that are crucial for driving growth and building future capabilities for the country.
