Uni-Asia Group Orders New Handysize Bulker in Japan

Singapore-listed bulker specialist Uni-Asia Group has made a significant move by ordering a new handysize bulk carrier, marking its first newbuilding contract in over ten years. The company has entered into an agreement with Nihon Shipyard for the construction of a 40,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) vessel, which is scheduled for delivery in the latter half of 2028. This strategic decision underscores Uni-Asia’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and enhancing its competitive edge in the dry bulk market.

The new vessel will be constructed at Imabari Shipbuilding’s Shimanami yard and will be dual-fuel ready, aligning with the industry’s shift towards more environmentally friendly shipping solutions. Although financial specifics of the contract have not been disclosed, the order is a clear indication of Uni-Asia’s focus on improving the environmental performance of its fleet. The company aims to ensure that its tonnage remains competitive, reflecting a proactive approach to fleet management.
