Union Maritime to Harness Wind Power with New Tankers

Union Maritime Limited is set to enhance its fleet’s sustainability by installing Rotor Sails on two new chemical tankers currently under construction. The 18,500 DWT vessels, being built at Wuhu Shipyard Co in China, will incorporate advanced technologies aimed at achieving cost-effective decarbonization. The installation of these innovative sails is scheduled for early 2026, marking a significant step towards meeting international emissions targets.

Innovative Design for Sustainable Shipping

The new chemical tankers will each be equipped with two Rotor Sails, measuring 3.5 meters in diameter and standing at heights of 20.5 meters and 24 meters. These sails are designed to meet EX-rated safety standards, making them suitable for vessels transporting potentially explosive materials. The integration of the Rotor Sails into the vessels’ design has been carried out by Odely Marine, a ship design and engineering consultancy based in China.

Union Maritime and BAR Technologies join forces to lead on wind propulsion technology

Union Maritime’s commitment to wind-assisted propulsion aligns with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20% by 2030, based on 2008 levels. The use of Rotor Sails will contribute to this target by ensuring that at least 5% of the energy consumed by the fleet comes from zero- or near-zero-emission sources. This initiative reflects Union Maritime’s ongoing dedication to exploring innovative technologies that enhance operational performance while promoting environmental sustainability.

Partnership for a Greener Future

The collaboration with Anemoi Marine Technologies underscores Union Maritime’s strategic focus on sustainable shipping solutions. Bhuvnesh Dogra, Chief Technical Officer of Union Maritime, emphasized that wind propulsion is integral to the company’s sustainability roadmap, particularly through their Project AeroPower initiative. This partnership aims to leverage Anemoi’s Rotor Sail technology to create a more energy-efficient fleet.

Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi Marine Technologies, expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting the operational advantages of integrating Rotor Sails from the outset. This project not only sets a new standard for chemical tankers but also showcases the potential of wind-assisted propulsion in the maritime industry. As the shipping sector increasingly prioritizes sustainability, this innovative approach may pave the way for future advancements in eco-friendly shipping practices.
