University of Wollongong students rewarded for maritime academic excellence

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has awarded its 2024 Academic Excellence Scholarship to Glenn Hanson and Dan Probert from the University of Wollongong.

This prestigious $10,000 scholarship is granted annually to students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance while pursuing a Master of Maritime Policy or a Graduate Certificate in Maritime Studies.

Glenn and Dan are among seven students receiving support from AMSA this year as part of its scholarship program, which aims to enhance skills and knowledge within the maritime industry.

AMSA Chief Executive Officer Mick Kinley emphasized the importance of having skilled professionals in maritime policy to support the growth and development of Australia’s maritime industry, as well as AMSA’s role as its safety regulator.

“Both domestic and international policies shape how the maritime industry operates and is regulated,” Mr. Kinley said. “Our Academic Excellence Scholarship is one way we ensure a continuous supply of skilled and knowledgeable professionals in this vital area.”

Distinguished Professor Stuart Kaye, Director of the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) at the University of Wollongong, expressed the university’s appreciation for AMSA’s support and the enduring partnership with the maritime regulator.

“We value our strong relationship with AMSA and are grateful for the financial assistance that allows our students to critically engage with and explore the factors influencing the development of maritime law and policy,” Professor Kaye said.
