US Issues Ultimatum to Iran Amid Escalating Tensions
DUBAI: The United States has issued a stark warning to Iran, demanding the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours or face military action against its power plants. This ultimatum comes in the wake of Iranian missile strikes that targeted communities near Israel’s nuclear facilities, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Both nations are now poised for potential military confrontations as tensions in the region reach a boiling point.
Iran’s Response to US Threats
In response to President Donald Trump’s ultimatum, Iran has declared that it will completely close the Strait of Hormuz if the US follows through on its threats. This vital waterway is crucial for global oil exports, with approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passing through it. Recent attacks on shipping and threats of further strikes have already halted nearly all tanker traffic, leading to significant cuts in oil production from major suppliers.
Trump’s warning, issued via social media, stated that if Iran does not comply, the US would target its power plants, starting with the largest. The US government argues that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard controls much of the country’s infrastructure, which is integral to its military operations. Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf responded by asserting that any attack on Iran’s infrastructure would result in retaliation against US energy and desalination facilities throughout the region.
Iran’s envoy to the International Maritime Organization indicated that navigation through the Strait would be permitted only for friendly nations, while ships from adversarial countries would be denied passage. Iran has already allowed vessels from China and other Asian countries to transit through the strait, further complicating the situation.
Escalation of Military Actions
The conflict intensified over the weekend when Iranian missiles struck two cities near Israel’s Dimona nuclear research center, injuring dozens and causing extensive damage. This marked a significant breach of Israel’s air defense capabilities, as it was the first time Iranian missiles successfully penetrated the heavily fortified area. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the situation as a “miracle” that no fatalities occurred, urging residents to heed warning sirens in the future.
In the wake of these attacks, Israel’s military reported that it was unable to intercept the missiles targeting Dimona and Arad. The strikes resulted in at least 64 injuries, highlighting the growing threat posed by Iranian military capabilities. Iran’s Qalibaf emphasized that the inability of Israel to defend itself in this area signifies a new phase in the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, Iran has targeted the UK-US Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean, suggesting that its missile technology may be more advanced than previously believed. The ongoing war has had far-reaching consequences, affecting global food and fuel prices, and raising concerns about the stability of the region.
