US Maritime Robotics Firm Partners with Dutch Shipyard for Innovative Wind-Powered Cargo Vessel

A US-based maritime robotics company, Clippership, has secured a construction agreement with KM Yachtbuilders, a Dutch shipyard, to develop a groundbreaking 78-foot wind-powered cargo vessel. This initiative aims to significantly reduce emissions associated with long-distance maritime transport. The autonomous vessel is set to launch in late 2026 and will commence pilot operations on transatlantic routes shortly thereafter.

Innovative Design and Features

The 78-foot (24-meter) cargo ship will utilize twin, foldable rigid wings as its primary means of wind propulsion. This design not only maximizes wind energy efficiency but also allows the vessel to adapt to various port operations and changing sea conditions. Clippership emphasizes that its in-house developed autonomy software and rigid-wing technology will create an integrated solution focused on safety, efficiency, and reliability for blue-water routes.

The vessel will incorporate advanced navigation, propulsion, and decision-making systems, minimizing the need for human oversight during operations. With a cargo capacity of up to 75 Euro-pallets in a climate-controlled hold, the ship is tailored for transporting high-value goods that require dependable, low-emission logistics. Built under the regulations of RINA (Registro Italiano Navale), the vessel will be classified as a WAPS General Cargo Ship, ensuring compliance with international maritime safety standards.

Commitment to Sustainable Transport

Scheduled to sail under the Maltese flag, the vessel will operate on pilot routes across the Atlantic, Caribbean, and South America following its launch. The naval architecture for this innovative ship is led by Dykstra Naval Architects, a firm renowned for designing some of the world’s most advanced sailing vessels, including the Maltese Falcon and SY Black Pearl.

Clippership’s partnership with KM Yachtbuilders, known for constructing safe and innovative aluminum vessels, further strengthens the project. The shipyard’s expertise in building custom, sustainable yachts and expedition vessels is complemented by RINA’s design approval, ensuring adherence to international regulations.

Structural engineering for the vessel is being handled by Seattle-based Glosten, which brings a wealth of experience in commercial and innovative vessel design. KM Yachtbuilders, recognized for its rugged and innovative expedition vessels, will oversee the construction of this pioneering cargo ship, reinforcing its commitment to crafting some of the world’s strongest and safest explorer yachts.

This collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainable cargo transport, showcasing the potential of wind-powered vessels in reducing the environmental impact of maritime logistics.
