Trump Administration Unveils Major Offshore Lease Sales

The Trump administration has announced an ambitious plan to conduct over 30 offshore oil and gas lease sales over the next 15 years. This initiative, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, aims to bolster the United States’ energy dominance by facilitating extensive leasing in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Cook Inlet. The first sale in the Gulf is scheduled for December 10, 2025, with additional sales planned through 2040.
Details of the Lease Sales Schedule
The newly released schedule outlines a total of 30 lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico, with two sales planned each year until 2039, and a single sale in 2040. This strategic approach is designed to provide a steady flow of opportunities for energy companies, fostering investment and job creation in the sector. In addition to the Gulf sales, the plan includes six lease sales in Alaska’s Cook Inlet, with the first set to take place in March 2024.

Doug Burgum, the U.S. Interior Secretary, emphasized the significance of this program, stating, “Under President Trump’s leadership, we’re putting in place a bold, long-term program that strengthens American energy dominance, creates good-paying jobs, and ensures we continue to responsibly develop our offshore resources.” This initiative is seen as a critical step toward enhancing the nation’s energy security and economic stability.
Industry leaders have also expressed support for the schedule. Erik Milito, president of the National Ocean Industries Association, highlighted that the long-term lease sales schedule will provide the necessary stability for companies to invest confidently in offshore energy projects. He stated, “A clear, long-term schedule of lease sales in the Gulf of America and Alaska’s Cook Inlet gives companies the certainty to invest, sustaining jobs and strengthening U.S. energy security.” This comprehensive plan is expected to have a positive impact on the economy and support communities across the nation.
