USS New Jersey returns to Navy after maintenance at Newport News Shipbuilding

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The USS New Jersey (SSN 796) has officially been redelivered to the U.S. Navy following the completion of its post-shakedown availability at HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding. This significant milestone was announced by the company on Friday, marking the submarine’s readiness for active duty after extensive maintenance and upgrades.

Comprehensive Upgrades and Maintenance Completed

The Virginia-class fast attack submarine underwent several months of rigorous post-delivery work, a standard procedure that ensures vessels are fully operational after their initial sea trials. This maintenance period included vital system upgrades, thorough testing, and necessary adjustments to enhance the submarine’s performance. HII reported that the shipyard successfully completed improvements to combat systems and electronics, alongside general maintenance tasks.

Jason Ward, vice president of new construction submarine programs at Newport News Shipbuilding, emphasized the importance of this redelivery. “Maintaining our nation’s undersea maritime supremacy is strengthened by the redelivery of USS New Jersey,” he stated. Ward highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Navy teams, underscoring their commitment to ensuring the submarine is mission-ready and integrated into the fleet.

The USS New Jersey stands as the Navy’s 25th Virginia-class submarine, reinforcing the United States’ capabilities in undersea warfare. With its return to service, the submarine is poised to contribute significantly to national defense and maritime operations.
