Vard books contract for two hybrid CSOVs
Vard Wins Major Contract for Offshore Wind Vessels

Norwegian shipbuilder Vard has announced a significant contract to design and construct two commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs) for an undisclosed international client. The deal, valued between €100 million ($116 million) and €200 million ($232 million), also includes an option for an additional vessel. This order marks a notable milestone for Vard, highlighting its growing presence in the offshore wind sector.
Innovative Design and Eco-Friendly Features
The new vessels will utilize the upgraded VARD 4 19 design, which has been meticulously developed by Vard Design in Ålesund. This design focuses on enhancing fuel efficiency and operability specifically for offshore wind operations. Both CSOVs will be equipped with advanced hybrid battery propulsion systems, allowing for zero-emission operations during certain phases of their duty cycles. This innovative feature not only reduces environmental impact but also provides peak power when required.
In addition to their eco-friendly propulsion systems, the vessels are designed with future adaptability in mind. They are ready for potential conversion to methanol fuel, aligning with the industry’s shift towards sustainable energy solutions. The CSOVs will serve critical roles in walk-to-work and commissioning tasks within the offshore wind sector, boasting large storage capacities, enhanced comfort for crew members, and superior station-keeping capabilities.
Runar Vågnes, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Vard, expressed pride in the order, stating, “With this order, we’ve now passed 40 walk-to-work vessels ordered or delivered.” This achievement underscores Vard’s commitment to advancing maritime technology in renewable energy.
Construction Plans and Global Collaboration
The construction of the two vessels will take place across multiple Vard facilities. The first hull will be constructed in Romania and subsequently outfitted in Norway, while the second vessel will be built at Vard’s facility in Vung Tau, Vietnam. This collaborative approach leverages Vard’s global resources and expertise to ensure high-quality production standards.
While specific delivery schedules have not been disclosed, the contract signifies a robust demand for specialized vessels in the offshore wind industry. As the sector continues to expand, Vard’s innovative designs and commitment to sustainability position the company as a key player in meeting the growing needs of renewable energy operations.
