VARD Launches Second Hybrid Power Vessel for Island Offshore

Norwegian shipbuilder VARD has officially laid the keel for the second hybrid power ocean energy construction vessel (OECV) for Island Offshore. This significant milestone took place at Vard Shipyards Romania in Tulcea, marking a key development in the construction of advanced maritime vessels. The new vessel, named Island Explorer, follows the first hybrid vessel, Island Evolution, which is also under construction at VARD’s Braila shipyard.
Details of the New Vessel
The Island Explorer, designated as NB 978, is part of a series of hybrid power OECVs ordered by Island Offshore. The initial order for the first vessel was placed in May 2024, with an option for two additional vessels confirmed shortly thereafter. Construction of Island Explorer commenced on July 1, 2024, with the first steel cut marking the official start of the project.
Both vessels are designed under the VARD 3 25 specifications, measuring 120 meters in length. They are engineered to perform a variety of subsea operations, including inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR), pipe laying, and the construction and installation of subsea infrastructure. Additionally, they will support diving operations and include equipment for remotely operated underwater inspections.

In alignment with the growing focus on renewable energy, these vessels are also equipped for various renewable energy tasks. These include walk-to-work operations, commissioning, cable laying and repairs, trenching, and survey activities. Furthermore, they will feature a gangway system for enhanced operational efficiency.
Significance for the Maritime Industry
The development of hybrid power vessels like the Island Explorer represents a significant advancement in the maritime industry, particularly in the context of sustainable energy solutions. As the demand for renewable energy sources continues to rise, the capabilities of these vessels will play a crucial role in supporting offshore energy projects. VARD’s commitment to innovation and sustainability positions it as a leader in the construction of specialized vessels that meet the evolving needs of the energy sector.
With the successful keel laying of Island Explorer, VARD and Island Offshore are set to make substantial contributions to the offshore energy landscape, paving the way for more efficient and environmentally friendly maritime operations.
