WA Government Backs NH3’s Clean Ammonia Project

The Government of Western Australia has officially approved NH3 Clean Energy’s WAH2 clean ammonia project for facilitation support under its Lead Agency Framework. This initiative aims to streamline the approvals process for the project, which is poised to supply low-emission ammonia to key markets in the Asia Pacific, including Japan and South Korea. NH3’s Chairman, Charles Whitfield, emphasized the project’s potential to contribute significantly to the state’s decarbonization efforts.

Streamlined Support for Project Development

The Department of Energy and Economic Diversification (DEED) of Western Australia has confirmed its commitment to supporting NH3 Clean Energy’s flagship WAH2 project. Under the Lead Agency Framework, the WA State Government provides a centralized entry point for project proponents, ensuring effective coordination across various government sectors. This framework facilitates case management of proposals and offers clear guidance throughout the approvals process.

NH3 Clean Energy Signs MOU with Pilbara Ports Authority

Staff from DEED’s Major Projects Facilitation area will collaborate closely with NH3 to provide essential advice and support as the WAH2 project progresses. This partnership is designed to enhance the efficiency of the approvals process, allowing NH3 to focus on meeting critical milestones for the project. Chairman Charles Whitfield remarked on the strengthening relationship with the WA government, highlighting the project’s potential to deliver significant economic opportunities for the state.

The WAH2 project is strategically located in one of Western Australia’s industrial hubs and within the Commonwealth-designated Pilbara Hydrogen Hub. It aims to produce low-emission ammonia, which will serve as a decarbonized fuel source for bulk carriers transporting iron ore from Australia to Asia. This aligns with the WA government’s initiatives to diversify and decarbonize the economy, positioning the state as a leader in clean energy production.

Project Timeline and Future Prospects

NH3 Clean Energy has outlined a clear timeline for the WAH2 project, with all front-end engineering and design (FEED) workstreams expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The company anticipates that ammonia production will commence in the second half of 2029, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development.

The WAH2 project not only aims to meet the growing demand for low-emission ammonia in the Asia Pacific region but also plays a crucial role in supporting global decarbonization efforts. As the project moves forward, NH3 is committed to delivering on its promises while maintaining a focus on sustainability and economic growth for Western Australia.
