Wärtsilä Cargo Handling System Chosen for New Very Large Ammonia Carrier

Wärtsilä to Supply Cargo Systems for New VLACs

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a prominent division of the technology group Wärtsilä, has secured a significant contract to supply cargo handling systems for three new Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs). These vessels, each with a capacity of 93,000 cubic meters, are currently under construction at Hanwha Ocean Co., a well-known shipyard in South Korea. Two of the ships are being built for a Greek ship owner, while the third is for a Japanese owner. This contract, booked in the fourth quarter of 2024, reinforces Wärtsilä’s status as a leading supplier in the cargo handling systems market.

Comprehensive Cargo Handling Solutions

The scope of Wärtsilä’s involvement in this project is extensive. It includes the engineering, material supply, and supervision of the complete Cargo Handling System. This system is crucial for ensuring optimal performance and safety during cargo operations. The design and engineering processes are tailored to meet the specific needs of VLACs, which are specially designed to transport ammonia. The handling of ammonia requires careful consideration due to its high specific gravity, which necessitates reinforced cargo tanks and hulls. Additionally, when fully loaded, these vessels will have a deeper draught, making the design and engineering of the cargo handling systems even more critical.

Wärtsilä’s strong relationship with Jiangnan Shipyard enhanced with system orders for five new VLEC

Wärtsilä’s commitment to quality and reliability is evident in their approach to this project. The company has a long-standing history of successful collaborations with Hanwha Ocean Co. Mr. Lee, the Leader of the Basic Design Team at Hanwha, expressed confidence in Wärtsilä’s capabilities, stating, “We have earlier worked with them and have complete trust in the efficiency and reliability of their products.” This partnership is expected to enhance the operational efficiency of the new VLACs, ensuring they meet the high standards required for modern shipping.

Strengthening Industry Relationships

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has established itself as the largest supplier of complete cargo handling systems for vessels in the ammonia transport segment. Patrick Ha, Sales Manager at Wärtsilä, highlighted the importance of their relationship with Hanwha Ocean Co. He stated, “We have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Hanwha and look forward to building an even stronger relationship with ship owners through this project.” This sentiment reflects Wärtsilä’s dedication to fostering strong partnerships within the maritime industry.

The delivery of Wärtsilä’s equipment to the shipyard is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025. As the project progresses, Wärtsilä remains committed to providing full support to both Hanwha Ocean Co. and the ship owners involved. This project not only signifies a step forward for Wärtsilä but also highlights the growing demand for specialized vessels capable of transporting ammonia safely and efficiently. The collaboration between Wärtsilä and Hanwha Ocean Co. is set to pave the way for advancements in cargo handling technology in the maritime sector.
